I’m Childfree By Choice, But There are 3 Things I Love About (Other People’s) Kids
Children are not something I’ve ever wanted, but there are some kids who I really enjoy spending time with and getting to know.
Here are three things that I really love about kids:
So much imagination and creativity.
Kids seem so much more in touch with what inside their minds.
As a writer, I love having “what if” conversations with kids and hearing about ideas they come up with, and the lens through which they see things.
Fearlessness and enthusiasm.
Kids throw themselves — literally — at life.
The fun, colorful, and sometimes mismatched outfits I see on kids remind me to not be afraid to experiment and push boundaries. They try new things, they make new friends everywhere they go. Everything is their favorite. I aspire to this.
All the best snacks.
Kids know what time it is when it comes to snack time.
I genuinely like kale, but I love hanging out with friends and their kids because there are usually things like juice boxes, tiny bags of crunchy things, sweet treats with sprinkles, candy disguised as granola bars, and inexplicably adorable food.
Giving them back.
When it’s past nap time and someone’s crying, I get to give a jaunty wave and walk away.
Usually, it is the parent who is crying and needs a nap.
Even though I absolutely hate the idea of having a child (and definitely have a much lower tolerance for being annoyed by kids), I still enjoy spending time with certain really amazing tiny humans.
